Sips, Trips and Falls through the Life Cycle back to
SlipsTripsFalls
This page discusses what can be done at each stage in the lifecycle. The work of Mark Geiger is instrumental here e.g. (1) at
SlipsTripsFallsResources.
Design
The designer can affect the risk of accidents by consideration to the following features. Not all of these are currently covered by Rules or Regulations.
Ship motion;
- long life coatings (tanks, decks) to reduce the need for access;
- non-slip, non-skid surfaces;
- placing sensors and controls outside tanks;
- eliminating tasks by equipment re-design;
- reducing frequency by greater reliability;
- arranging walkways and ladders to simplify traffic flow;
- locating gangways away from cranes;
- providing arrangements for barriers, fall arrest gear, stowing loose objects;
- ladder design, angles, hand rail design;
Build
There are some excellent initiatives listed at
SlipsTripsFallsResources with best practice for yard procedures.
“Ship design drives process design" Design for ease of build may well coincide with design for ease of inspection.
Use, maintenance
Risk exposure is affected by the vigour of the safety management system.
